Music Education

“The trumpeters and singers joined in unison, as with one voice, to give praise and thanks to the LORD. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, they raised their voices in praise to the LORD and sang: ‘He is good; his love endures forever.'” – 2 Chronicles 5:13

Richmond Christian School believes that music is a biblically-based form of praise and worship to our Lord and Creator. We strive to provide students with a wide variety of opportunities and experiences in the performing and fine arts. At the Elementary level, all students participate in music class at least once per week. These music classes introduce students to reading music, steady beat, rhythm, melody, vocal technique, and playing various instruments. As the students progress through Elementary school, the opportunities increase to develop their musical abilities. Beginning in 4th grade students have the opportunity to participate in our Elementary Choir as well as our Elementary Handbell Choir. Both of these groups are in addition to their regularly scheduled music classes. These elementary students work diligently to perform for a number of events, including Christmas Programs, Spring Concerts, and the regional ACSI Music Festival held annually in Virginia and North Carolina.

As the students move into Middle and High School, students are encouraged to continue to develop the talents and gifts God has given. In the High School, students participate in the High School Choir and the Handbell Choir. For those students seeking an extra challenge musically, they are encouraged to enroll in the Honors component of the Choir as well as audition for the Select Ensemble, composed of about 12-15 students. Each of these groups performs throughout the year at various events such as the ACSI Music Festival, the National Day of Prayer ceremony at the Chesterfield County Courthouse, Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, and other locations throughout the community.

To aid in the praise and worship of our Lord, high school students are able to participate in the High School Praise Band. This group of students organizes and leads the student body in worship each week during the chapel service. This is just another opportunity for students to use their God-given talents in service and reverence to God.

Visual Arts

Instruction in visual arts is available for all students from elementary through high school. It is the goal of Richmond Christian School to offer all students the opportunity to develop skills in fine arts by encouraging the appreciation of artistic expression of others as well as promoting the growth of creative self-expression.

Art class is a weekly exploratory class for all students in kindergarten through sixth grade. It is taught in the middle school as an elective, though the visual arts are also incorporated into other areas of study as students strive to complete projects to be presented visually to teachers and classmates. In the high school grades, there are opportunities for both semester and year long studies in the areas of visual arts, including advanced and honors level courses. Visual arts are also incorporated into elective classes in the areas of technology and yearbook.
